Fun at Free People

I usually prefer more classic fashion but could not resist trying on pleated garments.

Back in January 2019, I had some free time before my next interview and decided to stop at the nearby Free People store. This presented a great opportunity to conduct a market study to observe trends for winter 2018-2019. At the time, the majority of Free People’s merchandise had jewel-toned color palettes and dainty embellishments like laces and metal appliques. Glitz and glam rather than homey and cozy seemed to be the theme for the past winter season. Styles reflected an old Hollywood aesthetic, as even the everyday pieces had some sparkles. I tried on two looks that day – a pleated jumpsuit with a fur coat and a lace top paired with a gold pleated skirt.

I fell in love with the metallic pleats! I would wear this to a holiday party or night out in the city. I usually don’t look to Free People’s bohemian fashion for inspiration, but this glamorous jumpsuit immediately caught me eye. I own a different fur coat that, sometimes, I am too scared to wear. However, pairing fur with pleats creates an attractive contrast with textures.

I also paired the jumpsuit with a lighter white jacket. I would feel more comfortable wearing this over the pink jacket but think that both would be appropriate during the holiday season.

I thought the skirt screamed Paris. The gold stood beautifully own its own, but the floral print added a nice touch of femininity to the garment. I chose a lavender lace top that I tucked in. I would wear this to a business instead of an evening event. Conservative yet playful, this look shows both your professionalism and fashion flair.

With style,

Sarah
