80/20 Training: Improved Efficiency

Hello, my stylish friends! Before this summer, I would train mostly at moderate effort—i.e., I would work until this in-between state of tired, but not exhausted. 

For a while, I thought this would help my base runs, but then I noticed a few things. 

  • I wasn’t getting faster
  • I felt lethargic throughout the week
  • I felt burnt out from the monotony
Looking online, I kept seeing Runner’s World advocate for the 80/20 approach. Adjusting my training, I then slowed my base runs, only to have two hard days a week: my long run, as well as a more upbeat day, such as 400s or mile repeats. 

This approach (for me, personally) has felt so much better. I actually look forward to a change of pace, but I also love the slower days to let my body recovery and feel refreshed for the next day. The mix of easy plus a few intense sessions make for a sustainable workout routine that doesn’t feel as taxing. 

Side note: while I still love my Brooks, I recently switched back to New Balance – love that luxurious, plush cushion but without the bulk.
